Smith Farm

Smith Farm

Late summer on the Smith farm, looking northwest towards the Sacred Grove.

Reconstructed barn on the Smith farm.

The Smith’s had a cooper shed, where they made barrels.

Joseph Sr. and his sons were known for their industry, though detractors often called them lazy.

The frame home started by Alvin, the cooper shed, and barn seen from the Hathaway Brook in the early spring.

Shortly after completion of the frame home in 1825, the Smith’s lost ownership. They became tenants and residents under a new owner until they moved in 1829.

Joseph was living in the frame home when Moroni entrusted the golden plates to his care.

Josiah Stowell came to the farm in 1825 and hired Joseph as a laborer, which led to his eventual marriage to Emma Hale.

In early 1829, Joseph Sr. and Lucy moved from the frame home back into the log home where Hyrum and his wife were living.

The Smith farm comprised 100 acres, about 60 of which they cleared for planting. Maple trees were tapped for producing sugar.

The primary crops grown here were wheat, corn, beans, and flax.

In addition to larger crops, the Smith farm also had a family garden and an apple orchard.
