Whitney Store

Whitney Store

The formal organization of the First Presidency was revealed here.

The store was a focal point of the community in the early days of Kirtland.

In addition to dry goods, the store also served as a post office.

Newel Whitney was operating a general store and post office in Kirtland when Joseph first arrived.

Joseph first met Newel as he tended his store, having arrived in answer to the Whitney’s prayers for spiritual guidance.

This upstairs room in the Whitney Store was used for many church meetings, and served as headquarters of the Church.

16 or 17 revelations found in the D&C were received by Joseph in the Whitney Store.

The Prophet completed one phase of the inspired Bible translation while here.

The room where the School of the Prophets was held.

The Word of Wisdom was first taught in this room.

The first temple ordinances of this dispensation were performed here, and the Father and Son were seen in vision by several members.

The room above the store where Joseph and Emma slept, and where Joseph Smith III was born.

Emma’s kitchen on the ground floor of the store, located beneath the School of the Prophets.

The upstairs windows on the corner is where the School of the Prophets was held.

Joseph and Emma arrived in Kirtland by sleigh in February 1831, going first to the Whitney Store.

The store served as a missionary training center during the 1830s.

Orson Hyde came here to disprove the Book of Mormon, but became converted in the process.

The Smith family lived here for about a year and a half, from September 1832 to February 1834.

Newel became a bishop while in Kirtland.

The Bishop’s storehouse was located in the Whitney Store as the united order was practiced.

Newel Whitney hired workers who often slept in this upstairs room above the store. Joseph and Emma also slept here on occasion to give their bed to other visitors.
